Easy Ways To Make Money Online: Is There Such A Thing?
Six years ago I’d never considered that there might be ways to make money online. I’d made a couple of websites for my ‘real’ businesses, but they were purely and simply for advertising. Nothing more, nothing less.
Then one day not long after my hubby and I had closed the doors on our failed brick and mortar business, I saw something on TV that changed my beliefs about what was possible. Something that instilled in me a dream of working from home and that ultimately set me on a path of self discovery, learning, frustration and reward.
What I saw on TV
It was a short piece that aired on one of our current affairs programs about a builder who had created a website that had become very popular. That website was www.askthebuilder.com. What got me thinking was when they announced that he was making around $10,000 a month from Google Adsense!
That much money just from ads on a website???? That sounded like an easy way to make money!
Well, we’d just come out of a failed business with a lump of debt and little else. No home (I’d always owned my own home – since I was 18 years old), no jobs, no future prospects. We were middle aged, closer to retirement age than our prime and we’d just lost everything we’d worked for during our 25 years together.
So, after watching that short piece on TV my husband said ‘Hey, you know how to build a website!’
He was right. I did know. I’d done it a couple of times before.
And so I did and that was the beginning…
The beginning of my internet marketing apprenticeship
Once my site was up and running, I added some Google Adsense code to each of the pages of my website and waited for the money to start rolling in….
But guess what? The money didn’t roll in.
And so, in what was to be my first lesson about internet marketing, I discovered there was more to making money online than I’d initially thought. But nevertheless I was still convinced that there must be some quick and easy ways to make money on the internet.
If ‘Mr Ask The Builder’ could do it so could I!
So, without actually realising it, I began, what was to become my internet marketing apprenticeship. What started from a simple change in beliefs created by a few minutes of TV watching, developed into an obsession that saw me spending all of my spare time, for the next five years, sitting at my computer, reading, learning, plugging away, building website after website and slowly but surely, learning and developing, what I’ve come to realise is a craft as surely as is any other.
And I learned new things…
I found new teachers…
…and I found new tools.
WordPress makes the (internet) world go round
One of the first things I discovered in my quest to find quick and easy ways to make money on the internet was WordPress and what a discovery that was!
WordPress, for those who aren’t sure what it is, is a free platform for building websites, created for blogging, that the search engines love, and that makes creating websites quick and easy!
Building websites using WordPress was so much quicker and easier that it seemed that my success online was imminent.
Google looooved WordPress – apparently.
All I had to do was find out how to get loads of traffic and I’d be there. I’d be making money and lots of it!
Living the dream… 🙂
I converted my old site to a brand new WordPress site and I reveled in the beauty of it.
It was soooo much better than my plain old site created with my limited HTML knowledge!
It was pretty and it was functional and the plugins I was discovering had some super cool features. So I added my Adsense ads and I was certain I was on the right track because Google loved WordPress.
And so I waited, in anticipation, with optimism and the certainty that can be achieved in the beginning of any venture, but guess what?
The money still didn’t show up…
